Your Life: Are you the CEO? What controls your time?
How much of your day do you control? It can easily be taken over by the day-to-day grind. However, there are also a lot of time wasters that if better managed, we could create a little more window of time for the things we love. Here’s a few examples of time wasters:
- T.V. It’s ok every once in while, because sometimes we need a break. However, 6-12 hour marathons of your favorite shows might just be too much!
- Smart phones. They’re great because they literally do everything now, but they take up so much time. Guilty as charged 🙂 I use it for work but I tend to work 24/7 if my phone is nearby.
- Too many emails and other notifications. I’ve heard so many times it’s better to designate a specific time frame to check emails and notifications otherwise you’ll be spending your whole day checking your phone or computer. Turn the notifications on silent so you can concentrate on your current task at hand. There was a time when these did not exist (believe or not) so it can wait.
- Procrastination. It could be work, household stuff, a project your working on anything. And we all do it from time to time. Sometimes fear causes us to put things off until tomorrow. But we must remember, tomorrow is never promised, don’t have any regrets.

Step #1 Create bucket list
Yes. Create a list of everything you want to do in your life before you die. It seems silly but it works to help you align what you want from life with what you are actually doing in life. I’ll be writing more about this in another post in the future. Even if it seems like something you would never think possible to do, just write it down!
Write at least 50 things it can literally be anything: a career you want, places you want to travel, giving back to the community, weight loss, health, family goals, owning a business, whatever you desire. What’s your passion? And why the heck are you not living it NOW? Take inventory of your life and see what changes need to be made. It may even be a little painful at first, but you have to start somewhere.
Step#2 Manage your time by changing your mindset
We all say we won’t have enough time, but really everyone has the same hours in a day. It’s how we use it that counts. Look at your schedule. How does your day break down? Are you doing things that will get you closer to your bucket list? Why not? What can be done to change that?
Take time to prioritize your day. Get tough projects done at your most energetic time of day. Group similar tasks together. Get help for things you can delegate. Set specific times for certain tasks and do not deviate from them. See how much time you can free up.
In order to change your mindset, you must change how to talk to yourself. A positive outlook and positive self-image comes from positive self-talk. Now say that 3 times 🙂
Tell yourself “I can”, “I will”, “I am able” instead of “I can’t”, “I don’t know if I will”, “I’m not able to do that”.
Look in the mirror and see beyond the surface and tell yourself something each day that will motivate you to be your best every day. Try this: “I am the CEO of my life. I will take charge of what is in my control and learn how to adapt to things out of my control. I will make each day count.”
Step#3 Make time for the people and things you enjoy. Take a break!
Your loved ones are so important. Taking a much-needed break from a busy life is also important. It is good for mental health and overall wellness. Being the CEO of your life means making time for what’s most dear to your heart. Plan time in your life to enjoy life. Smell the roses! Watch a sunset. Play with your children and interact on their level. Date your spouse again. Go on vacation. Call or visit an old friend or relative. Help someone less fortunate than you. Teach something to others. Walk your dog. Workout to your favorite music. Read a book. You get the picture right? What is your heart aching to do? Something or someone is pulling on your heartstrings right now, don’t hesitate, do it now!
Ok, so try these and see what a difference it makes for you. Be the CEO of your life now, you can do this. Take a look at some of my other posts for more helpful tips on taking control of your life and time. Until next time! 🙂
